Butterfield's Ice Cream, nestled at 946 W Main St in charming Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, is truly a gem in the heart of Piscataquis County for ice cream enthusiasts. This artisan ice cream shop has garnered a loyal following for its rich, creamy textures and a dazzling variety of flavor options that feel handcrafted with passion and precision.
Every scoop at Butterfield’s whispers the story of careful craftsmanship, from classics like Banana Cream Pie bursting with real banana and cookie pieces, to the indulgently chocolaty Mocha Fudge Brownie and the ever-popular Maple Walnut that keeps customers coming back time and again. One can’t help but be drawn in by their sundae creations — the DoverFoxcroft Sundae is a standout, layering vanilla, chocolate, and mint chip ice cream with hot fudge, caramel drizzle, a fluffy crown of whipped cream, and a bright red cherry on top. Each bite is a symphony of cool, creamy delight perfectly balanced by rich toppings.
The menu reads like an ice cream lover’s dream: inventive sundae options such as the Piscataquis Power Plus and the whimsically named Bozo Clown Sundae offer both nostalgic charm and a playful twist. Their classic shakes and ice cream sodas, like the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Soda, evoke memories of summer days at vintage soda fountains while delivering a satisfying treat in every sip.
What sets Butterfield’s apart is the unmistakable quality of its ingredients and the evident care in every batch — customers regularly praise the genuineness of flavors and the balanced sweetness. Haley Jones perfectly captures this sentiment, noting how none of the ice cream is overly sweet, yet each flavor bursts with authentic freshness, from their "daak chocolate" to black raspberry. This is no ordinary ice cream; it’s a lovingly prepared, high-caliber product that delights the palate without overwhelming it.
The welcoming atmosphere is enhanced by friendly staff and a beautifully remodeled space that invites you to linger and savor every mouthful. While the shop is cozy, expect bustling energy, especially during warm weather when locals and travelers alike flock here for a sweet reprieve. A small note from experience — although the passion is clear, a few moments of slower or less spirited service can occur on busier days, but the ice cream itself consistently delivers a top-tier experience.
Whether you're treating yourself to a single scoop from their extensive list of unique flavors — including the playful Ice Cream of Doom or a nostalgic Bubble Gum — or indulging in a large sundae masterpiece, Butterfield’s Ice Cream makes a lasting impression. It is not just an ice cream shop; it’s a destination where passion for pure, quality frozen treats transforms simple dessert into an unforgettable experience.
For families, dog-lovers, and ice cream aficionados alike, Butterfield's is a must-visit. Carly Gurel’s mention of the “pup ice cream bowl” shows thoughtful care extending even to furry friends — a delightful extra touch that enhances the welcoming vibe. Despite some distance, many like Miss Mariss find themselves craving Butterfield’s long after they’ve left, a testament to the truly special nature of this local favorite.
Butterfield's Ice Cream invites you to savor every scoop, relish the smooth, rich flavors, and join a community that celebrates the simple joy of perfectly made ice cream.

High quality ice cream with a great texture and lots of flavor options. Butterfield’s was delicious! I tried the daak chocolate, banana cream pie, and black raspberry. The chocolate was nice and chocolate-y. The banana cream pie had real banana and cookie pieces and didn’t taste like fake banana. None of the ice cream was overly sweet and it all tasted like it was made with high quality dairy.

Delicious homemade ice cream! Stopped here in August 2025 before heading back to North Carolina. Had their wonderful "Dover-Foxcroft" sundae. Vanilla, chocolate, and mint chip ice cream topped with hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream, and of course a cherry. Eight bucks for more than I could finish. Cannot complain. The best food of any type in all Piscataquis County! Will be certain to return on my next trip to Maine. Highly recommended!

The best ice cream that we have ever had! SO GOOD!! The only problem is it's 4+ hours away from where we live & I crave it all the time!! The flavors are all so good, and I haven't had ice cream like this anywhere else!!

The wait staff at the window weren't in the best mood, maybe because we went on a hot day but their working in a/c. Ordered the vanilla peanut butter ice cream, which had no taste of peanut butter and no indication of being anything other then unflavored. Waffle cone was stale. Strawberry shake was alright but specifically ordered a banana split with no chocolate, got chocolate. Good thing we weren't allergic. We will stick to Gifford's for ice cream.
